No human being is an island. As a social species, we work, think and excel in groups as well as individually. As such, we are only able to experience social wellness when we live in harmony with others and have positive and interdependent relationships with others.
Social resilience refers to your capability to foster, engage in and sustain positive social relationships and to endure and recover from stressors that come with interacting with others. Socially resilient individuals value diverse perspectives, and are able to relate, interact and communicate effectively with others. Social resilience is also about being comfortable in your own skin to be able to engage with others and contribute to society.
You can level up your social resilience by:
- Developing a support network of friends and family whom you talk with regularly
- Getting involved in a variety of school, work and community activities
- Practising active listening – pay attention to others with genuine interest
- Developing interpersonal skills like communication and collaboration
- Managing conflict in a healthy and respectful manner
- Being there: Be present and responsive to others
- Contributing to the greater good of the community
